Where Harkness Memorial State Park Is

Harkness Memorial State Park is in Waterford, Connecticut, at 275 Great Neck Road—not in Groton. The coastal setting brings together landscaped grounds, shoreline paths and views across Long Island Sound, with the historic Eolia mansion at the center of the estate.

If you’re staying in Groton, Harkness makes a regional outing; the available details don’t establish a drive time or route from town. For a Groton stay, see Hilltop Express Inn. You can also plan other outings with these guides to Bluff Point State Park in Groton and Fort Trumbull State Park.

What to See on the Grounds

Eolia is a 42-room mansion built in 1906. Edward and Mary Harkness bought it in 1907 as their summer home, and the estate’s more than 200 acres also operated as a working farm. The mansion was designed by Lord & Hewlett in the Roman Renaissance Revival style. The estate passed to the State of Connecticut in 1950.

The grounds hold six gardens: the East Garden, West Garden, Boxwood Parterre, Alpine Rock Garden, Grounds and Cutting Garden. In the East Garden, Asian statues and a jade-stone pool mark the setting. The West Garden has symmetrical paths, iron fencing, a limestone fountain and a pond.

Several designers shaped the estate. Beginning in 1909, architect James Gamble Rogers worked on interior renovations, the pergola tearoom and the carriage-house support complex.

He also worked with Brett & Hall on the west garden’s layout. From 1918 to 1929, landscape designer Beatrix Jones Farrand redesigned the West Garden and created the East Garden, Boxwood Parterre and Alpine Rock Garden.

Shoreline Walks and Outdoor Activities

The Harkness Memorial Loop is an easy 1.3-mile trail, with an average completion time of 25 minutes. It passes the mansion, gardens, a boardwalk and a wildlife-viewing platform, and includes views of Long Island Sound. It’s a practical route for linking the estate’s architecture and gardens with its coastal scenery in one walk.

For a shorter option, the easy Niering Walk covers 0.25 mile. It gives views of Goshen Cove, shoreline and marsh habitat, and reaches a wildlife-viewing platform. Swimming is not permitted at the park, so plan shoreline time around walking and looking out over the water rather than getting in for a swim.

Hours, Admission, and Seasonal Access

Guided tours of Eolia Mansion and the formal gardens run on weekends and holidays between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Friends of Harkness volunteer docents lead the tours, which run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; the last tour begins at 1:30 p.m. Group tours are also available by appointment through Friends of Harkness.

Those are the available details about tour timing; admission prices, general park hours and parking arrangements aren’t specified here. Before you plan around a tour or set out, check the Connecticut State Parks official site before you go for current practical information.

Getting There and Parking

Use the Waterford address, 275 Great Neck Road, to plan your route. No verified driving time from Hilltop Express Inn or parking details are available, so confirm both with an official source before leaving.

If you’re building a day around state parks, the linked Bluff Point and Fort Trumbull guides offer other options to consider, but the details here don’t establish travel times between those parks and Harkness.
